BNDR Opposition Committee
Save Our Somerset
The BNDR, or Bridgwater
Northern Distributor Road,
is a proposed scheme for a
2.5km road and 900 houses.

It is a scheme that:
Threatens Somerset's largest Water Vole population (protected species)
Is within hundreds of metres of official recordings of Great Crested Newts (protected species)
Is home to badgers, otters within hundreds of metres in connecting rhynes (waterways), and a variety of other protected wildlife
Has not been subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment!
Has been included in the Local Plan!
Plans to build on some of the finest Somerset Levels-type land. The Somerset Levels have gained national recognition.
Plans to build on land that will need deep drainage for road and houses, which could result in shrinkage and consequently subsidence as the peat oxidises
Plans to route 200 lorries day and night, to a factory, through a proposed housing estate
Plans to run past a secondary school. Children would have to cross the new road.
Would act as a short-cut for all motorway traffic trying to 'bypass' Bridgwater to get on to the A39 road to Minehead
Would act as a main route to carry nuclear waste from the decommissioned Hinkley A power station
Offers no evidence of being able to make a significant difference, if any, to town centre traffic congestion
Is planned to include land with much-used public footpaths
Is planned to include around seven acres of much used, separate public open space that the public was not consulted upon before outline planning permission was granted. This land is reputed to have a Covenant on it banning development, but now a developer has an 'option to buy' a large chunk of it
Plans to run through the heart of a Saxon village! And in-fill with houses between the village and Bridgwater
English Nature says its consent to mitigation proposals should not be misconstrued as approval of the scheme
800 people signed a petition against it in 1977 (yes, 1977)
Over 300 people objected to Sedgemoor District Council in 1998, when the scheme had been resurrected, before outline planning permission was granted.
Over 2,500 people signed a petition in 2000, that went to John Prescott
Over 1,000 people attend public rallies and public meetings now!

THE ROAD IS OUT OF PLACE AND OUT OF DATE.

THE PUBLIC OBJECTED AT THE 'PROPER' TIME. THEY WERE IGNORED.

THIS IS WHY IT IS NECESSARY TO DEMAND A FULL PUBLIC INQUIRY AND A FULL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT. WHY ARE THE AUTHORITIES RELUCTANT TO DO THIS?

Residents are currently looking into the environmental, planning and other aspects of this case. Residents intend to mount a legal challenge.
